Standard English (2013) is a multi-panelled text-based artwork, which plays with language. Benedict anderson, in his highly influential book, Imagined Communities, discusses the role printed text and its dissemination had on the psyche of the people in the building of national identity. My artwork draws on ideas and words from this and other seminal texts in post- colonial thinking. words, phrases and letters are broken and fractured across the panels. perhaps this slippage allows the potential for new contexts to be formed around ideas of belonging and place.
