Reading from Both Sides (2013)
The process of making Reading from Both Sides was very labour intensive. it involved hand stitching a repeated grid pattern in gold thread on 300gsm paper. the front of the image is a grid, a conventional tropeused in western abstract art. it is ordered, logical and unwavering in its highly organized structure. the reverse side of the image reveals a complex and subtle dismantling of this structure. Rather than being in opposition, i recognized that both sides could be read contrapuntally. i have made three versions of this work, two i have installed as works attached to the wall. the final work is shown as a material object, gently folded over and placed on a wooden base on the floor, revealing and concealing both sides of the form.
